by poems & doodles
for longer than i care to admit
i knew the truth about the existence of
santa
the tooth fairy
and the easter bunny
but said nothing.
i never questioned
santa’s familiar handwriting
or the sale of my teeth
or how an upright rabbit knew
our home well enough to fit hard boiled eggs
into nooks and crannies id never noticed.
because there was something
much more
magical and
fleeing
about the care
you demonstrated to
preserve my
fragile adolescence with
harmless omissions of truth
and candy-sweet,
singsong manipulations
of my trust.
it was nice
believing in that
believing in you
that way
for a while.

Ooo.
That final “for awhile” was so poignant.
Bittersweet.
Simple, effective, evocative.
